There is something special about seeing McKelvey Park slowly fill up on the morning of the Incredible Kidz Run. Families arrive together, children are already excited before the race begins, volunteers are checking tables and supplies, and runners are stretching or catching up with friends. Then the color starts flying, the course fills with movement, and suddenly the whole park feels alive.
This year’s 12th Annual Incredible Kidz 5K and 1 Mile Color Fun Run felt especially meaningful because so many people came out to be part of it. Some participants joined the 5K, others chose the Color Fun Run, while friends and family members spent the morning cheering from the sidelines. Children proudly carried their medals, families stopped for photos covered in color, and volunteers stayed busy throughout the event helping everything come together.
Looking back at the morning, one thing stood out: more people than ever had chosen to spend it with Sunny Glen. The event welcomed 460 registered participants, the largest turnout in the history of the Incredible Kidz Run, along with 57 volunteers and 17 sponsors who helped make the day possible.
Those numbers are exciting, but the people behind them are what made the morning worth remembering.
A Bigger Incredible Kidz Run With The Same Sense Of Community

The 2026 Incredible Kidz Run marked a new milestone for Sunny Glen Children’s Home. McKelvey Park welcomed runners taking on the 5K, families enjoying the 1 Mile Color Fun Run, children, longtime supporters, and people experiencing a Sunny Glen event for the first time.
Throughout the course, participants moved through clouds of bright color, stopped for photos, encouraged one another, and celebrated at the finish. Some came ready to test their pace, while others were happy to walk beside their children or enjoy the route with friends.
That mix is part of what makes the run feel different from a traditional race. There is room for competition, but there is just as much room for families, laughter, and simply spending the morning together.
The record turnout was worth celebrating, but the smaller moments helped give the morning its character. Parents stayed beside their children. Friends cheered one another on. Young runners showed off their medals. For a few hours, McKelvey Park became a gathering place for people who had different reasons for coming but shared the same morning.
For those discovering the organization through the run, Sunny Glen’s Who We Are page offers a closer look at the mission, history, and approach that guide its work with children and young adults. Sunny Glen describes its work around three core goals: providing a safe community, nurturing healing, and creating hope.
Why A Morning Like This Matters

The Incredible Kidz Run may last only a few hours, but the purpose behind it connects to work that continues every day.
Sunny Glen Children’s Home was founded in 1936 and marks 90 years of service in 2026. Over those decades, the organization has welcomed more than 25,000 children, while continuing its mission of providing a place of hope for every child.
Today, Sunny Glen’s ministries and services include residential foster care, supervised independent living at the Allen House, counseling through the Poenisch Counseling Center, and services for refugee children. Together, these programs create a continuum of care designed to meet children and young adults at different stages of their lives.
That is why participation in an event like the Incredible Kidz Run matters beyond race day. A family registering for the Color Fun Run, a volunteer giving part of a Saturday morning, or a local business choosing to sponsor the event may each be contributing differently, but together they help strengthen the wider circle of people surrounding Sunny Glen and the young people it serves.
The Volunteers Behind The Morning

Hundreds of participants filled McKelvey Park, but another group was working throughout the morning to make sure everyone could enjoy the event.
This year, 57 volunteers gave their time to the Incredible Kidz Run. They helped around event tables and stations, assisted participants and families, and took care of the many small details that can easily go unnoticed once the run begins.
That behind-the-scenes support reflects a much larger volunteer community around Sunny Glen. Throughout the year, people contribute through mentoring, tutoring, recreational activities, event support, church and business group projects, and other opportunities. Those interested in becoming part of that effort can explore ways to get involved with Sunny Glen
Sunny Glen is grateful to every volunteer who spent part of the weekend helping make the event welcoming, organized, and enjoyable for the families who attended.
Thank You To The Sponsors Who Helped Make It Possible

This year’s Incredible Kidz Run was also supported by 17 sponsors whose involvement helped bring the event together.
Local businesses, organizations, and community partners provide an important form of support for events like this. Their contributions help create an experience families can enjoy while also connecting more people with Sunny Glen and its mission.
Their support also represents something larger than signs around the park. Sunny Glen has long emphasized that meaningful care for children depends on people continuing to show up in different ways, whether through volunteering, donations, partnerships, or simply remaining connected to the mission. Sunny Glen extends its sincere thanks to each of the 17 sponsors who supported this year’s run. Their generosity helped create a morning where hundreds of people from across Harlingen and the Rio Grande Valley could gather, move, laugh, and spend time together.
More Than A Race At McKelvey Park
Some of the most memorable parts of the morning had very little to do with finish times.
Children held up medals for photos. Families gathered together after completing the course. Friends compared colorful shirts and laughed at just how much powder had managed to end up on their faces, shoes, and probably several places they would discover later.
The Incredible Kidz Run welcomes people who want to challenge themselves on the 5K as well as families who simply want to enjoy the Color Fun Run together. What makes that atmosphere especially meaningful is the mission surrounding it. Sunny Glen’s programs focus on helping children and young adults experience safety, care, and relationships they can begin to trust.
One community run cannot tell the whole Sunny Glen story. What it can do is introduce more people to that story and give families, volunteers, businesses, and supporters a way to become part of it.
What Stayed With Us After The Run

By the time participants began heading home, the color had started to settle, medals had found their way around plenty of proud necks, and McKelvey Park was slowly returning to an ordinary Saturday morning.
What remained was the feeling of seeing so many people gathered in one place for Sunny Glen.
This year was the largest Incredible Kidz Run yet, and that milestone is worth celebrating. But what made the morning memorable was seeing the people behind the numbers: families sharing the course, children enjoying their medals, volunteers helping quietly in the background, sponsors standing behind the event, and friends cheering from the sidelines.
For generations, Sunny Glen has been shaped by people willing to care, serve, and remain present for children who need support. The organization continues to describe its mission through the ideas of welcoming, nurturing, equipping, and helping young people move forward with greater hope for the future.
The Sunny Glen Incredible Kidz Run gave that community another morning to be together.
Looking Forward To The Next Time We Gather

The 12th Annual Incredible Kidz Run may be over, but it will not be the last opportunity for families, volunteers, supporters, and community partners to gather with Sunny Glen.
Throughout the year, there are different ways to stay connected, whether through volunteering, attending another community event, learning more about Sunny Glen’s programs, or supporting the children and young adults in its care. Sometimes involvement begins with something as simple as showing up for one event and deciding to learn what comes next.
For people looking for practical ways to continue that involvement, Sunny Glen shares meaningful community service ideas for individuals, families, churches, businesses, and groups interested in serving beyond a single event.
For longtime supporters and those just beginning to learn about the organization, Welcome to the Family: What It Means to Be Sunny Glen offers another look at the values and relationships behind Sunny Glen’s work and what it means to continue showing up for children and young adults.
To every runner, walker, family member, volunteer, sponsor, staff member, community partner, and friend who spent part of the morning with Sunny Glen, thank you for helping make the 2026 Incredible Kidz Run one to remember.
The color may have washed off by now, but there will be more reasons to gather, more ways to get involved, and hopefully many more mornings like this one ahead.
