Laughter, Learning & Lasting Impact: How a Charity Trivia Night Supports Youth Independence

Team 'Here for the Snacks' celebrates their win at Sunny Glen's Sixth Annual Trivia Night, a charity trivia night fundraiser benefiting foster youth in Harlingen, Texas

A Night That Proves Community Changes Everything

Laughter has a way of doing more than filling a room. It connects people. It reminds us we’re in this together. On the night of May 14, 2026, that’s exactly what happened when the Rio Grande Valley came together for our Sixth Annual Trivia Night (a charity trivia night) at 101 E Jackson Street in Harlingen, Texas.

The walls came down early. Strangers became teammates. No performance required, no pressure to impress — just the gift of being together, whether you knew the capital of Uzbekistan or confidently guessed Ryan Gosling for every Civil War question.

Teams came ready. Answers flew. Friendly arguments broke out over whether that one movie came out in 1993 or 1994. And somewhere between the trivia and the BBQ, something beautiful took shape. When people choose to show up for someone they may never meet, that’s not just kindness. That’s a reflection of something bigger than any of us.

Every team that registered for this charity trivia night showed up for something real. Every sponsorship carried purpose. Every question answered moved the needle for young adults at the Supervised Independent Living Center at the Allen House. People who are working hard to build their lives, one step at a time. People who deserve a community that believes in them, even when the Disney round gets surprisingly competitive.

That’s what this night was really about. Not the points. Not the bragging rights. But the quiet, steady truth that we’re better when we look out for one another. God’s love shows up in moments like these, through ordinary people doing something generous with their time, their energy, and their hearts.

The Rio Grande Valley showed up. And because of that, the young adults at the Allen House are better supported today than they were yesterday.

The Heart Behind A Charity Trivia Night

Before the first question was ever read, there was already a story worth telling. Sunny Glen Children’s Home has been walking alongside at-risk youth in South Texas since 1936. Over no less than 90 years of learning what children who’ve experienced trauma need most, we’ve had the privilege of impacting more than 25,000 children through programs rooted in the belief that every young person deserves to be seen, supported, and loved.

They need safety and consistency. But they also need something else: to see adults enjoying life together, witnessing community built not on obligation but on genuine connection. When we host this event, we’re modeling exactly what we hope our children will find in their own futures. That conviction isn’t new to us.

Scripture calls us in Isaiah 1:17 to “defend the cause of the fatherless.” That call has guided our work for generations, and it guided every moment of this event.

The trivia night was never just a fundraiser. It was an expression of what we believe: that a community gathered around a shared table can change a life. The proceeds from this year’s event benefit the Monte and Amy Allen House Supervised Independent Living Center, a program that sits at the center of everything we do.

What the Allen House Represents

The Allen House opened in 2020 inside a beautifully restored century-old building in Harlingen. It exists to address a gap that too many young people fall through.

When a young adult turns 18 and ages out of the child welfare system, the structured support they’ve relied on disappears almost overnight. No parent to call when the car breaks down. No family home to return to during college breaks. No one to teach them how to schedule a doctor’s appointment, negotiate a lease, or know when and how to ask for help.

The Allen House steps into that space.

Residents aged 18 to 22 receive free housing and utilities, a private room and bathroom, access to an industrial kitchen, laundry facilities, and a business center. More than that, they receive life coaching, mentorship, and hands-on instruction in the skills that make independent living possible: how to cook nutritious meals, manage a bank account, advocate for themselves in professional settings, schedule medical appointments, navigate lease agreements, and ask for help when they need it. Residents are required to maintain employment or pursue higher education while in the program.

It’s not a safety net that holds people in place. It’s a launching pad.

How One Evening Raised the Stakes

Each year, this event grows in both spirit and impact. Teams of four registered at $250 per team, which included a BBQ dinner, snacks, beverages, and full participation across every round. (Yes, the BBQ was worth showing up for all on its own. The cause made it taste even better.)

Sponsorships were available at three levels. This year’s Einstein Level Title Sponsor was Paycom, a leading HR and payroll software company whose generous investment set the tone for the entire evening. We’re grateful for their belief in this work.

The Da Vinci Level ($700) included three teams and a business name and logo on promotional materials — a $50 savings. The Aristotle Level ($450) included two teams with promotional recognition, also saving $50. The Einstein Level Title Sponsorship, taken this year by Paycom, represents the event’s highest tier of investment.

The Categories That Kept Everyone on Their Toes

The evening covered six trivia categories: History, 90s, Sports, Movies, The Bible, and Disney. Each one brought its own energy to the room. Some questions had the crowd groaning. Some had people jumping out of their seats. The 90s round sparked what can only be described as a passionate generational debate.

The Disney and Bible rounds reminded everyone that knowing your classics never goes out of style.

The Bible round was a little more humbling for some teams than they expected. Which feels spiritually appropriate.

Meet the Winners

When the final scores were tallied, three teams rose to the top: Here for the Snacks, Reigning Champs, and Fro-Tarians. Each team earned their place through sharp thinking, quick answers, and a whole lot of heart.

We caught up with Roxana Moore from first-place team Here for the Snacks, and she summed it up well. “It went great,” she said. “We got first place finally. Third time’s the charm.” When asked what made the difference this year, her answer said everything about what teamwork actually looks like. “I think we all contribute in different ways. So it’s great that someone is good in history, and someone is good in movies, and I’m just really fast.”

That’s the spirit of the night right there. Know your strengths. Trust your people. Win on a Tuesday in May.

Every Team Played with Purpose

Winning is fun, but every single team that walked through the doors on May 14 made this event what it was. They came ready to compete, ready to laugh, and ready to play with purpose. Whether a team finished first or last, their presence mattered. Their registration dollars mattered. The way they cheered each other on mattered.

A fundraiser can feel like a single event. But what happened in that room on May 14 will stretch far beyond that evening. The funds raised will go toward a young adult who’s learning to budget for the first time, or preparing for a job interview, or cooking a meal for themselves in that industrial kitchen on a quiet weeknight. Those aren’t small moments. They’re the building blocks of a future.

Who we are is shaped by our belief that every child, and every young adult, carries worth that God placed in them. Supporting the Allen House is one of the most concrete ways we live that belief out loud.

More Than a Fundraiser

We live in a world that moves fast. Screens replace faces, texts replace conversations, and people can feel isolated even when surrounded by others. Events like this create something different: space for neighbors to become friends, for quiet voices to speak up, for the person who lives alone to feel part of something bigger.

When you’re puzzling over an answer with a stranger, something changes. The walls come down. And in that space, something the trivia scoreboard can’t measure takes shape — the knowledge that we’re not isolated individuals but members of a community. That our resources, however large or small, can serve purposes beyond ourselves.

There are really three kinds of knowledge worth celebrating on a night like this. The trivia kind — capitals, dates, song lyrics. The practical kind — what our Allen House residents gain as they learn to cook, budget, and advocate for themselves. And the deeper kind: that we belong to one another, and that belonging changes everything.

What Your Support Actually Does

The ministries and services at Sunny Glen span residential care, counseling through the Poenisch Counseling Center, refugee support, and the Allen House supervised independent living program. Each one addresses a specific, real need. Each one is rooted in Christian faith and the conviction that healing is possible, that hope is real, and that no young person should face their future alone.

Your support from this event flows directly into that work. It’s not abstract. It’s a young adult who has a place to sleep, a mentor in their corner, and a community that said: we see you, and we’re for you.

Thank You for Being the Village

Events like this don’t happen without a village. Thank you to Paycom for stepping up as our title sponsor. Thank you to every team that registered, every sponsor who gave, and every person who spread the word, including the ones who recruited their coworkers with the promise of “easy” trivia questions. (Spoiler: no such thing.)

You made a lasting difference for young adults at the Allen House. Because of you, they’re better supported as they work toward independent futures. That’s exactly what this community is capable of when we gather around a shared table and give with open hands.

If this recap stirred something in you, don’t let it stop here. Get involved as a volunteer, make a donation to directly support young adults at the Allen House, or contact the team to learn more. We hope to see you at the table again next year, with a stronger team and at least a passing knowledge of 90s pop culture.
