When you’re looking for mental health resources in the Rio Grande Valley, you’re not just searching for therapy. You’re searching for hope. For someone who gets it. For a place where you won’t be turned away because your wallet is empty.
The Poenisch Counseling Center, a ministry of Sunny Glen Children’s Home, provides professional counseling to individuals and families throughout Cameron County. Here’s what makes us different: we don’t think your income should determine whether you get help. Our services cost little to nothing, depending on what you can pay.
Why? Because God’s love doesn’t come with a price tag. And neither should healing.
You’re not a case file. You’re a person. And that matters here.
Counseling for Every Stage of Life
Life doesn’t pause when things get hard. Anxiety creeps in, depression settles like fog, and relationships strain under the weight of unspoken pain. Whether you’re 18 or 80, whether you’re struggling alone or watching someone you love suffer, these moments demand real support.
The Poenisch Counseling Center provides individual, couples, family, and group counseling for people of all ages. We also specialize in supporting those facing depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Our team meets you where you are, with compassion and without judgment. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you walk through our doors. In fact, most people don’t. We’re here to help you find your way forward, one session at a time.
A Healing Space for Children

Children carry burdens too. Sometimes they just don’t have words for what hurts. That’s where play therapy becomes powerful. Our dedicated play therapy room offers children a gentle, safe environment to express what’s happening inside. Through play, they can process emotions, work through trauma, and begin to heal.
It’s not about toys and games. It’s about giving kids the tools to understand themselves and the world around them. When children heal, families heal. And that changes everything. Our play therapy services recognize that young minds need different pathways to healing, pathways that honor how they naturally communicate and make sense of their experiences.
Support for Growing Families
Bringing a new child into your family is beautiful and complicated. Post-adoption counseling helps families navigate the joy and challenge of building new bonds. Whether you’re adjusting to new routines, managing big emotions, or working through attachment struggles, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Our counselors understand the unique dynamics of newly formed families. We offer guidance rooted in both clinical expertise and genuine care. This isn’t about fixing what’s broken. It’s about strengthening what’s being built, helping families create the foundation they need to thrive together through every season ahead.
Who We Serve
We serve adults aged 18 and older, as well as children who come with their families. All clients must reside in Cameron County. If you’re not sure whether counseling is right for you, we offer screenings for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health concerns.
You don’t need to walk through our doors with all the answers. We’re here to help you figure out what you need and how to move forward. Sometimes the hardest part is just starting. We make that as simple as possible, because getting help should never feel like one more obstacle to overcome when you’re already struggling.
What Your Visit Looks Like

Our counseling center is designed to feel calm and welcoming. You’ll find four private offices and a play therapy room that feels more like a cozy living space than a clinical setting. Sessions are led by licensed mental health professionals, LPC-Associates, and counseling interns working under close clinical supervision.
We offer both in-person and Telehealth appointments to fit your schedule and comfort level. And because we serve the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, many of our staff members speak Spanish. Se habla Español. We want you to feel understood in every sense of the word, able to express yourself fully in the language that comes most naturally to you.

What mental health resources are available in the Rio Grande Valley for children?
The Rio Grande Valley has grown its mental health support for kids. You’ll find individual therapy, trauma-focused care, play therapy, and group counseling that address anxiety, depression, PTSD, and attachment struggles. Licensed professionals build treatment plans around each child’s story. They help kids process what’s happened to them, learn new ways to cope, and build healthier connections with the people who love them. Family counseling strengthens those bonds. Because healing happens best when everyone’s working together.
How do faith-based programs help children dealing with trauma?
Faith-based programs meet traumatized children where they are—body, mind, and spirit. Licensed counselors use proven methods like trauma therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques. But they also make space for the spiritual questions kids ask when life’s been hard. Why did this happen? Does God still care about me? Clinical care and spiritual support aren’t separate things. They work together. God’s love meets practical help. That’s how real healing starts. It’s not just about feeling better. It’s about becoming whole.
What does trauma-informed care look like for children?
Trauma-informed care begins with safety. Kids need to know what’s coming next. They need adults who show up consistently, who mean what they say. You’ll see trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy for the little ones, attachment work for those who’ve learned not to trust. Staff who understand how trauma changes a child’s brain and behavior. Routines matter. Patience matters. So does celebrating small wins. Each child moves at their own pace. Therapists, counselors, and families stay connected throughout. Everyone pulls in the same direction.
What counseling services do faith-based organizations offer children?
Licensed counselors at faith-based centers provide individual therapy, family sessions, play therapy, and group work tailored to what each child needs. They treat anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral struggles—using approaches backed by research. But they also honor what families believe. Many programs use sliding fee scales so cost doesn’t become a barrier. The difference? Counselors see each child as God sees them. Beloved. Worth fighting for. Capable of healing. Professional care wrapped in compassion. That’s the environment where kids start to hope again.
Who qualifies for mental health services at faith-based counseling centers?
Requirements depend on the program. At the Poenisch Counseling Center, children come with their families. All clients must live in Texas Region 11. Adults 18 and up can get individual services. Most programs start with an assessment to figure out what kind of care fits best. Financial need often factors in. Sliding scales help families who couldn’t otherwise afford help. Every organization has a different capacity and focus. Call directly to ask about eligibility. Requirements shift based on what each center can offer and who they’re called to serve.
