One of our staff members once described a boy who wouldn’t eat at the table for weeks. He’d take his food and disappear. Sit in a corner. Guard his plate. Eventually, they learned he’d gone long stretches without enough food before coming to us. His body remembered even when his words couldn’t explain it. Once they understood what was underneath that behavior, everything changed. They didn’t push. They just stayed close. Made sure he knew the food would be there tomorrow, and the day after that.
